What's special about onethousandpaintings.com and these paintings?
onethousandpaintings.com is a truly global artproject that has received worldwide media coverage (BBC, WIRED, boingboing.net and many others: see press). On May 30th and 31st 2006 alone, 322 paintings have been sold - most probably the highest number of unique, handmade paintings sold on the internet within such a short time. Paintings have been shipped to 27 countries all over the world.

One number, one painting - the number is the art is the limit is the price. Each of the one thousand paintings is unique, showing a number between 1 and 1000. This is an experiment of art and mathematics, on the web, the first of its kind.

The value of each painting is defined by its number (value = 1000 - number). The earlier you buy, the more you save.

What's the price for one painting?
The easiest way to check the current price of your favourite number is to go to the availability page.

Generally, the value of a number is defined by the number itself, in the following way: value = 1000 - number. However, this is only the maximum price. Initially, a discount of 90% applies. This discount will decrease by an absolute 10% for every hundred paintings that are sold (for example, after 300 sold paintings, the discount will be 60%). In short, the earlier you buy your favourite number, the less you pay. For detailed information about the price development of any given number, go to the availability page and click on the "More info..." next to the number of interest.

In any case, the minimum price is $40. Shipping will be charged seperately.

Is payment secure?
Yes. Payment is handled by PayPal. You can pay with any major credit card or, if applicable, with your PayPal account. For more info, see the PayPal Website.

How much are the shipping fees?
That depends where the painting should be shipped to. The following applies:

Switzerland: $10
Europe: $25
USA and other international: $35

Note that you will see the exact shipping costs for your painting during the ordering process.

How can I be sure that the painting is unique?
First, I personally guarantee that each number will only be painted once. Additionally, each canvas will show a unique authenticity number on the back (which is different from the main number on the front, and which is created by a specfic, secret algorithm). You can check the authenticity of a painting here.

Simply buy your number directly on this website, and the originality and uniqueness of the painting is guaranteed.

My favourite number is already sold. Can you make a copy for me?
Absolutely not! The limit is the art - each number exists only once. I will never make a copy of any of these paintings. See also: How can I be sure that the painting is unique?

Can I get a refund if I don't like the painting?
No. After more than 750 paintings sold without anyone not liking it, I feel quite confident that this will not be an issue ;-)

Can I order multiple numbers?
Yes, you can. If you wish to order multiple numbers, please contact me at sala@onethousandpaintings.com.
Yes, but you have to order them seperately on this site. In case your total shipping cost should be less than what you paid, I will refund the difference after shipping.

What does the painting with number xyz look like?
Since all paintings look very similar (all paintings have the same color and use the same font), it doesn't make sense to photograph all of them. Here's an example of some paintings:

Who are you?
My name is Sala (Marcel Salathé). I'm a visual artist living in Zürich, Switzerland living in the SF area in California in Pennsylvania. You can find more about me here, on the blog on this website or in the press section.

When I don't think about numbers, I'm at Stanford Penn State University where I work as a digital epidemiologist (mostly thinking about numbers too...)
